"The work you do while you procrastinate is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life." —Jessica Hische
My name is Emily Hesslen. I am a calligraphy artist and freelance designer located in Northwest Arkansas, where I live with my husband Ben and dogs Atlas and Tully. I studied graphic design and family & human services at John Brown University. I still have a deep love for design, but these days I spend most of my time specializing in calligraphy and lettering projects.
To say that I'm obsessed with lettering would be an understatement. I have been doodling letters pretty much since I could hold a pencil. In early college, I began to develop an interest in hand lettering (the art of drawing letters, different from calligraphy). A couple years later, pointed pen calligraphy and brush lettering began to catch my fancy, and I devoted hundreds of hours to learning traditional and modern techniques.
I teach modern calligraphy, lettering, and seasonal craft workshops, and I try to incorporate custom lettering into my graphic design projects whenever possible.
I love problem solving, which is why graphic design still holds such a special place in my heart. I enjoy using logic and strategy combined with my passion for handmade quality craftsmanship. I am a hungry learner, and I often jump into things head first, whether I feel prepared or not! I love to create.
Aside from calligraphy and design, I also love woodworking, DIY projects. crafting, playing with my cute dogs, and visiting craft breweries with my husband!
Thank you for your interest in my work! I'm able to do what I love because of people like you!
